Day 6          Abla  -  Huéneja          Wednesday 01/05/2019

Last night  after settling Alison in we had a walkabout all over the steep hill on which Abla is built followed by a delicious meal of tapas in the bar in the central square. This morning breakfast at 6.30 am in our pension. Out at 7 am again into a cool and sunny mrorning. 

A fair amount of river bed walking, roads and some paths, always going up steadily with a “blip” going up steeply into Fiñana at km 8, where we stopped for a drink, and out steeply down again. And then another minor blip at Huertezuela. And a final very steep blip up shortly before arriving in Huéneja. We are walking in the foot hills(?) of the Sierra Nevada and can see the snow covered mountain tops as we go.

Arriving in Huéneja we walked all over the place in search of a bar - no bar! A place this size and no bar?! No, a bar/restaurant is a 20 min walk away next to the motorway, so we found our albergue, settled in, siesta for me, and we will go to this bar this evening for our dinner.

On the whole the walk was not too difficult except the final sections on the very pebbly river bed - long stretches of the river bed are gravelly, but lately it has been full of biggish pebbles very difficult to walk on. And of course there are the very steep ascents and descents inside the towns.

So no bar, no beer upon our arrival! Will make up for it this evening!

Hier au soir après avoir installé Alison nous sommes partis faire une promenade sur la colline escarpée sur laquelle est construite la ville d'Abla. Excellent dîner avec des tapas ensuite sur la place du centre. Ce matin prise du petit déjeuner à 6h90 et départ à 7 h par une matinée fraîche et ensoleillée. Agrébale mélange de sentiers dans le lit de la rivière, de routes et de psites en lèégère montée avec un changement au kilomètre 8 à Finana où on a fait un arret pour boire et une sortie de ce village bien pentue en descente. Nouveua changement de pente dans le sens montant à Huertezuela puis un dernier assez court en arrivant à Huéneja. On marche au pied de la sierra Nevada et en marchant on peut voir la neige qui recouvre le sommet des montagnes.. En arrivant à Huéneja on a sillonné la ville à la recherche d'un bar ; aucun en vue ! Un endroit tel que cela sans bar !!! Le bar est en fait situé près de l'autoroute à 20 mn de marche du centre.On a d'abord été à notre auberge pour s'installer et faire une sieste (pour moi) et on ira diner en soirée au bar.Dans l'ensemble, la marche n'a pas été trop difficile si on excepte le final dans le lit de la rivière qui est très caillouteux avec parfois de gros blocs de pierre qui ne facilitent pas la progression.Il faut aussi ajouter les montées et descentes diverses dans les villes

Donc pas de bar, pas de bière en arrivant . On verra cela ce soir !!

Ina with Daughters on Mozárabe from Almeria to Granada Taking off again! This year’s walk will be shorter than previous ones – only ten days of actual walking. The “arabized”  Christians who lived on Muslim occupied territory under Al-Andalus from the VIII – XV century were called “Mozárabe”. This itinerary for the Christians in the South of Spain shows the various civilizations which influenced this part of the country: Roman, Arab and Christian.  The Camino Mozárabe starts in Almeria, or Malaga, or Jaén in Andalusia and goes through Granada and Córdoba to join the Via de la Plata in Merida in Estremadura – 1400 kms from Almeria to Santiago de Compostela of which we will walk only the 200 kms from Almeria to Granada. Andrea and I will fly together from London to Almeria on April 26th and start walking on the 27th.  Alison will join us on the 29th. Day 5          Nacimiento  -  Abla          Tuesday,  30/04/2019 15,5 kms     250 m height difference = + 2.5 kms effort = 18 kms 5 hours 45 min of which 3 pauses, 15, 15 and 30 min. Off at 7.45 am after breakfast in our bar. Another beautifully cool and sunny morning. A long time on the road past an abandoned village on a hillside and ruins of farmhouses along the road. And again we arrive in the dry river bed - less easy to walk than the previous stretches. The camino leaves the river bed to take us into the village Doña Maria where we find a bar which gives me a welcome rest. The owner of the bar serves our drinks with a “bitteschön” and we discover that he was born in Essen, Germany, came to Spain when he was 9 years old, went back to Germany to work for 8 years, and is settled for good now in Spain... Back to the river bed which becomes more difficult to walk, more pebbly, and almost imperceptibly uphill, but the strain is there, for me anyway - 250 m up over the 15 kms we w

Day 1         Friday,     26/04/2019 Got up at an outlandishly early hour to catch our plane to Almeria at 5:45h. Landed at 9:30h and allowed ourselves a taxi to our four star hotel in the center of Almeria - a fitting start for a pilgrimage!  A walkabout in the city, cathedral which looked like it had been freshly cleaned - the stalls of a book fair somewhat spoiled the picture. Then on to the citadel which was originally built by the moors(?) and a large part added by the Catholic Kings after the Reconquista to demonstrate their power. A delicious meal in an Arab restaurant and back to our hotel for a late siesta. Another walkabout to go to the Refugios de la Guerra Civil, underground air raid shelters which were originally built to protect the population (40000) from German air raids during the Civil war and also served during the Second World War - however the guided tours are booked out until next Wednesday!
