Day 8 Alquife - Guadix Friday 03/05/2019
24 km Several small blips steeply up and down, but mostly steadily down from
1200 to 900 m
7.25 hours of which 3 pauses, 5, 30 and 45 minutes
Breakfast at 7 am with the Dutch/Spanish couple, Afonso and Pauline. Out at 7.30 into a cold morning. Fortunately I had gloves which had lived in my pack for years and not been used since my first long walk. As I was getting out my gloves Afonso and Pauline, overtook us. The French couple had left long before us.
After a while walking with a constant view of the snow-capped mountains we crossed a dry river bed and soon the path dipped down to a lovely green valley with a stream running through it, in fact two branches of it, because we had to cross it twice - luckily twice there was a narrow enough place to jump across. And then up went the path, quite steeply and for a long time. Several times I tried to catch in a photograph the depth of the gorge along which we ascended - I do not think I succeeded.

And then up went the path, quite steeply and for a long time. Several times I tried to catch in a photograph the depth of the gorge along which we ascended - I do not think I succeeded.
In the next village, Jerez del Marquesado, we did not see a bar - neither had Afonso and Pauline whom we met. So while they continued on their way, we, sitting on a bench, had a Madeleine left over from breakfast. And as we were getting ready to leave there was an sms to Andrea from Afonso: they had found a bar coming out of the village. Too late for us....
We soon left the road and found ourselves going on a narrow alpine path through a forest and on to a large track around an artificial lake. More large track to end up in Cogolhos de Guadix - two bars to chose from! And a while later Afonso and Pauline showed up just as we were getting ready to leave.
All of this walk was practically flat, apart from when we went down into what was probably a riverbed centuries ago if not more and where there were plantations (?) of almonds - we have been seeing a lot of almond plantations for a while now! And we continued flat all the way into Guadix.
We are booked into a very special house, la Casa de la Escultora. And when we arrived we were shown into what used to be their pilgrims albergue, but is no longer used as such. So we are having a complete floor to ourselves - a large room with a double bed and three single beds plus a sofa bed which gives to a large living room and on to a dining area and on to a terrace with a huge dining table - excellent for a group! And as we were descending to go on our walkabout a door opened and the monsieur of the French couple came out looking somewhat disheveled, obviously surfacing from their siesta!
Now the special thing about Guadix are troglodyte houses - there are many holes in the mountain sides and since prehistoric times they have been developed to provide accommodation for people. So after settling into our very original hostal/hotel we set out to go to the “platform “ from where you get a spectacular view over those dwellings and on to the museum set up in such a dewelling. Which is open until 6 pm and thus we missed the cathedral which, different from other cathedrals, closes at 6 pm. So on we went to have a drink in the Plaza Mayor, a beautifully maintained renaissance(?) complete square, not too large, so it was quite cosy. A drink and a sweet something or other from a pasteleria.
And on to a restaurant famous for their tapas and famous anyway as we noticed when finally we left after 9pm and the place had filled up with locals - was completely empty when we arrived around 8 pm. So we celebrated our mid walk, had delicious tapas and raciones (Bernard?). And when we left it had started to rain. While we waited under some canopy the rain increased until in the end we just ran for our door.
And now lying in bed writing this a thunderstorm has come on and it has been rumbling on for some time with the rain coming down in buckets. However the forecast is quite good for tomorrow. We hope for us and for the people of Andaluzia. This weekend they have a special holiday, the feast of the Cruz, all over this region.
The thunder has stopped and the rain is slowing down.....

Alquife - Guadix
vendredi 03.05.019
24 km Plusieurs fois
