Day
7 Huéneja - Alquife
Thursday 02/05/2019
18 km Height difference total of 400 m = +4 km effort = total of 22 km
7.20 hours of which 3 pauses, 25, 45 and 45 minutes
Left at 7.10 am. Again fresh and sunny, although overcast skies were forecast. In fact it was sunny all day and very windy most of the time. Since we had not had breakfast we stopped at the first village, Dolár, and the bar was open!
At the following village we went all over the place in search of a bar. That was where, on the central square with a market, we came across the row of old people sitting on a long bench. I asked to take their photo explaining that I was 79 years old and they told me that the lady at the far end of the bench was 90! Found the bar in the end and had an involved discussion which we did not want be interrupt which explains the length of the pause.
Went through the next village without stopping, but I could not go on without having a bite to eat and a siesta. So the perfect picnic place was found and we had the big sandwich we had bought the previous evening and I had my siesta. Only another 4 km to go to our destination. And there we found the Dutch/Spanish couple already installed and also the French couple who had stayed at our pension at Abla.
Last night they stayed in a hotel/restaurant next to a motorway service station and we met them as we were coming in to the restaurant for our evening meal. And at last it hit me where we had met before: we were arriving in Santiago at the same time at the end of the Camino Primitivo and spent the night in the albergue on Monte de Gozo before going to the cathedral the following day. And there by chance I came across them again. And having thought that I always forget to take photographs of people I meet and later regret it, I took their photo. A quick search on my iPad brought the proof - their photo on my blog of the Camino Primitivo in 2013!
The day today was wonderful! A variety of paths, very little road, no dry river bed to walk in, just crossed it once near a bridge, a relatively modern bridge, which to me seems to indicate that there was water not so long ago. The path goes at an altitude of about 1200, up and down a lot with one stretch of 2 km at the same level, and always the magnificent view on the Sierra Nevada!
Steeply up in the end to the center of Alquife where we have a sumptuous menu for one plus a mixed salad to share - for the three of us! And steeply up again to the outskirts of this town (population 780) to our (private) albergue. Since the Dutch/Spanish/French are sitting outside on the terrasse we join them for a palaver even before having a shower and washing our clothes. Too many details to relate here. Am too tired and have not yet sent the photos

“I
forgot to mention the setup in this albergue. This is private, but
still an albergue. The municipal albergues do not normally charge a
fixed price. If they do it is not more than 5 €. And they do not
accept reservations. The private ones accept reservations and have a
fixed price - 18€ per person in this one. And you have a room to
yourself or yourselves - three in our case. But they are still
albergues with the comfort or lack of it. In our room there is one
bunk and two single beds. There are four rooms and I have had a
glimpse into one of the others - two single beds, maybe a bunk in a
corner which I did not see. We are eight here tonight - the
Dutch/Spanish couple, the French couple, us three plus one more
person who is not backpacking. There is one, admittedly large,
bathroom with shower and toilet and washbasin for the lot of us - the
toilet is not even separate....

un long banc.
On
