Day 3          Rioja  -  Santa Cruz de Marchena     Sunday  28/04/2019

When we came “home” last night after a delicious tapas dinner together with the others we discovered that another two had arrived, two young men from Italy.

Off at daybreak this morning, quick breakfast of a big Madeleine, and off into a cool windy sunny morning. Flat at first but soon ups and downs in quick succession and steeper, longer ups and steep, short downs until we reached the top of the world.  And it was getting quite hot! 

Just before we got there, with Andrea encourageing me, “ only a short step to the dip and then another short up and it will be going down all the way to our destination!” But I was completely out of breath and could not take any more and we stopped right there next to this track. A bite to eat and a mini siesta and I was right again!  

And I tried my hands-free umbrella for the first time. This is an improved version of the original magic umbrella and it works very well. With more wind maybe not!? It has an extendable pull-out shaft the handle of which you fix to the hip belt of the rucksack and farther up the shaft is fixed to a contraption on the shoulder straps. So my head and upper body are in the shade. Brilliant!

Then “going down all the way to our destination” turned out to be quite steep. And it was not really our destination, but the place where we were going to have a pause. Another four kms and we arrived - hot and quite dead! A hurried salad in the only restaurant which was closing, meeting with Mercedes, the president of the Asociación Jacobéa de Almeria who has been advising me during my planning of this camino. 

The albergue is a house with living/dining room and kitchen downstairs and two bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with twin beds, and a large space on the landing where you can put several matresses on the floor. What a change from the bunk beds! We are four from the Rioja albergue last night. Andrea and myself ended up in the room with the twin beds which is also the coolest room! Lucky! Marty from the US had the room with the (narrow) double bed and the French couple from Grenoble have two mattresses on the floor.

En arrivant « à la maison » hier au soir après avoir pris un délicieux dîner de tapas avec les autres, nous avons découvert que deux nouveaux pèlerins &étaient arrivés, ils étaient italiens

Départ au lever du jour ce matin, rapide petit déjeuner (une grosse madeleine) et nous voilà dehors par un temps ensoleillé mais venteux. Du plat au début puis bientôt des montées et des descentes se sont succedées avec un court intervalle allant vers des pentes de plus en plus abruptes jusqu'à ce que nous atteignons le « sommet du monde ». Et en plus la chaleur arrivait.

Juste avant d'arriver à ce point, Andréa m'a encouragé : « encore un petit pas et encore un autre et cela va être de la descente jusqu'à notre destination finale » Mais j'étais complètement hors d'haleine et je ne pouvais aller plus loin. Nous nous sommes arrêtées juste au bord de cette piste. UN petit peu à manger, une mini sieste et j'étais opérationnelle.

Puis j'ai testé mon parapluie « mains libres » C'est une version plus aboutie de mon premier parapluie magique et cela fonctionne bien mais peut être moins si le vent souffle plus fort. Il a un manche télescopique que vous fixez à la ceinture ventrale du sac à dos puis à la bretelle avec une bande auto agrippante. Comme cela ma tête et le haut de mon corps sont à l'ombre. Magnifique réalisation !

La descente vers notre destination s'est avérée être une marche tranquille. Ce n'était pas en fait notre destination mais un endroit où on avait prévu de faire une pause. Plus que 4 km et nous serons arrivées. Nous avons eu chaud et somme presque « morts » ! On a pris une salade vite fait dans un restaurant qui allait fermer et avons rencontré Mercedes le président de l'associaition « Jacobéa de Alméria » qui m’avait donné des conseils alors que je préparais mon voyage.

L'auberge est une maison avec un salon salle à manger, une cuisine en bas et deux chambres, l'une avec un lit double et l'autre avec des lits jumeaux et une grande surface où on peut installer plusieurs matelas sur le plancher. Nous étions les quatre de l'auberge de la Rioja hier au soir. Quel changement avec les lits superposés. André et moi avons choisi la chambre avec les lits doubles et c'est aussi la plus fraîche.

On a eu de la chance ! Marty l'américain à pris celle avec le lit double qui était étroit et le couple de français a fait paillasse par terre.
